Porsche Dominance at Sebring Faces Hefty Penalty for Long Beach

Porsche Motorsport’s dominance at the 12 Hours of Sebring has prompted officials to implement a weight penalty on the Porsche 963 to level the playing field in the IMSA SportsCar Championship. The car will now have a power-to-weight ratio of 480 kilowatts at 1,100 kilograms, marking the first time such a negative rating has been imposed in IMSA. This move comes after the International Automobile Federation (FIA) increased the weight penalty for LMDh cars, with Porsche facing a 45-kilogram penalty at Long Beach.

In contrast, the Aston Martin Valkyrie continues to enjoy a favorable power-to-weight ratio, highlighting the significant adjustments in store for Porsche to maintain competitiveness. Notably, both Porsche Penske Motorsport and JDC-Miller Motorsports’ previous-year Porsche will face varying Balance of Performance (BoP) adjustments, with BMW ultimately benefitting the most from the changes.

The dynamic changes in power-to-weight ratios across different speed ranges illustrate the efforts to enhance competition and prevent any single manufacturer from dominating the championship. With specific adjustments at different circuits, such as Long Beach and Sebring, IMSA aims to ensure a thrilling racing experience for both teams and spectators.
