Aston Martin’s continuous changes in leadership have raised concerns among critics, with former F1 TV presenter Will Buxton expressing his reservations about the impact on the team’s culture. The team has seen a series of shifts in leadership positions, with Andy Cowell taking over as Group CEO in 2024, then transitioning to the role of team principal in January 2025. However, Cowell’s tenure was short-lived as Adrian Newey assumed the team principal duties in 2026 while also serving as the managing technical partner.
Subsequently, Cowell moved to the position of chief strategy officer, and Mike Krack took on the role of chief trackside officer. As Aston Martin faces challenges in the 2026 season, speculations have emerged that Lawrence Stroll may appoint a new team principal to allow Newey to focus on his other responsibilities, although the team has refuted these rumors.
Comparing the situation to a football club, Buxton noted the constant changes are reminiscent of clubs that change managers frequently, impacting the team’s overall culture and direction. Despite Stroll’s desire for immediate results, Buxton emphasized the need for consistency in leadership to steer the team in the right direction. The frequent changes, according to Buxton, hinder the team’s progress and fail to provide a clear direction forward. The unsettled leadership structure may pose challenges in achieving long-term success in Formula 1.
