Aston Martin will undergo a significant change as Jonathan Wheatley departs from the Audi Formula 1 team to join them immediately. This move comes after Adrian Newey decided to step down from his team principal role at Aston Martin to focus more on technical aspects. Wheatley’s appointment follows Aston Martin’s challenging start to the 2026 Formula 1 season, where technical issues with the Honda power unit affected the team’s performance. Despite heavy investment from owner Lawrence Stroll in assembling a top-notch team, including engineers like Newey and Andy Cowell, Aston Martin has struggled to compete in races due to engine reliability concerns. Wheatley, who has a wealth of experience from his time at Benetton, Renault, and Red Bull, will now lead Aston Martin in efforts to enhance their performance and reliability, primarily focusing on acquiring a powerful engine package. Meanwhile, at Audi, Mattia Binotto will continue to lead the F1 project and take on additional responsibilities as team principal, to steer the team towards championship contention by 2030. Although Audi currently ranks ninth in the constructors’ championship, there are plans to restructure the team for future success in Formula 1.
