BMW M Motorsport Chief, Markus Flasch, recently stated that entering MotoGP in 2027 with the new 850cc regulations is “unlikely” for the company. After Suzuki’s withdrawal from MotoGP at the end of 2022, a vacant spot on the grid opened up opportunities for new manufacturers. However, in August 2024, Dorna announced that the grid would be limited to 22 riders, and new manufacturers could only enter by partnering with existing independent teams, making it difficult for BMW to enter MotoGP as a factory team directly.
The departure of Toprak Razgatlıoglu, who is set to move from BMW to Pramac Yamaha in MotoGP at the end of the 2025 season, has raised questions about the brand’s racing strategy. BMW is still in the process of formulating its motorsport strategy, with MotoGP being a long-discussed option. However, no final decision has been made yet, as BMW will first make strategic decisions before determining the technical steps. Participating in MotoGP in 2027 is currently not feasible for the brand.
Despite considering MotoGP, BMW is also exploring other motorsport options, including off-road and Superbike. Flasch mentioned that Superbike is not a bad option but is too Euro-centric. The brand is expected to take a few more months to come to a final decision. Meanwhile, BMW is preparing to maintain its presence in the World Superbike Championship, with Danilo Petrucci likely to replace Razgatlioglu in 2026.
With five manufacturers currently in MotoGP – Ducati, Aprilia, KTM, Yamaha, and Honda – BMW would need to partner with an independent team if they decide to join. However, no concrete steps have been taken in this direction at the moment.
